EE West Bromwich Cooling Upgrade

The phased swap out of existing air conditioning systems.

The project consisted of the phased swap out of the existing air conditioning system in two switch rooms without loss in cooling duty. Along with a new chiller compound and stainless steel chilled water ring main and associated power supplies.

Mechanical Scope of Works
  • Supply and install 2x 604kW free-cooling Airedale chillers
  • Factory witness test of chillers & RACU’s
  • Provision of 11x Airedale 60kW downflow cooling units (5x in Comms Room & 6x in Switch 5) complete with floor stand supports
  • Provision of new stainless chilled water pipework ring main from external chiller compound into roof void and down to individual RACU units in the switch rooms
  • Installation of new external pressurisation unit in GRP housing
  • Phased de-gassing of redundant DX cooling units and removal from site
  • Remove redundant DX condensers from external plant compound
  • Strip out redundant DX refrigeration pipework and associated containment.
  • Provision of new mains cold water supply to chilled water pressurisation unit
  • Thermal insulation to chilled water & mains water pipework
  • Trace heating to mains cold water service pipework
  • Provision of drip trays c/w leak detection system under chilled water ring main in roof void
  • Make good holes through ceiling from redundant pipework drops
  • Modify existing condensate pipework to suit new cooling units
  • Provision of new floor grilles c/w dampers
  • Associated BMS upgrade works to interface with new cooling units
  • Provision of new external concrete base for 2x chillers including mesh fence around compound
  • Flushing & cleaning of new chilled water pipework prior to filling new pipework with glycol/water mix.
  • Load test new chillers utilising temporary boiler plant.
  • Heat load test in switch 5 & comms room
  • Balancing of chilled water pipework to each cooling unit
  • Builderswork holes for cabling & containment including firestopping
  • Decoration to walls in affected areas
  • Testing & commissioning including balancing of floor grilles
Electrical Scope of Works
  • LV cabling power supplies from MLVSP 3 & 4 to feed new chillers
  • Install new 2x distribution boards (A&B) in comms room & switch 5 to feed cooling units
  • Install ancillary power supplies to new leak detection equipment, trace heating & vesda equipment
  • Strip out redundant electrical supplies in floor void
