Project Birchwood is a new purpose-built office, research and manufacturing facility for TTP, a world-leading local technology and product development organisation based on Melbourn Science Park. The new site will deliver 9,200 sqm of accommodation space split over 3 single storey buildings named as ‘The Hive, Tech Barn and Forum’ on an enlarged site that retains the character of the low-density ‘science park’.
The Hive is the largest of the 3 buildings offering 7,300 sqm of multipurpose office and laboratory space, with a number of breakout areas, kitchens and toilets. There are 8 laboratories in total, 4 enclosed and 4 open spaces, with the clients goal being to achieve complete flexibility throughout the building. DBS have achieved this flexibility in relation to the electrical and data distribution through the provision of below floor services, with a vast array of bespoke tailored ladders within the lab spaces which house systems such as LEV, plug in power modules, compressed air and process gases.
The Forum acts as the main presentation area for social events complete with a kitchen/servery, AV walls, gym, toilet block, shower block and external cycle store.
The Tech Barn provides a large ‘project space’ for the purpose of major manufacturing works, along with a Laser Lab and mezzanine floor for future expansion. Within the Tech Barn is the energy centre which serves heating and cooling distribution below ground to all buildings on site via the district wet distribution network.
